What is an Alpaca?

An alpaca (Vicugna pacos) is a domesticated species of South American camelid. It resembles a small llama in appearance but with some notable differences. Alpaca have less visible guard hair in their fleece, are almost 1/2 the size of a Llama and have short leaf shaped ears. Llama ears are most often banana shaped!

There are two breeds of alpaca; Suri and Huacaya . Suri fibre hangs in long luxurious locks (like ringlets) and Huacaya fleece stands out from their skin giving a soft "teddy bear" look. Both breeds' fleece is comparable to cashmere.

Alpacas are kept in herds that graze on the level heights of the Andes of Peru, southern Bolivia, Ecuador, and northern Chile at an altitude of 3,500 m (11,500 ft) to 5,000 m (16,000 ft) above sea level, throughout the year.

Alpacas are considerably smaller than llamas, and unlike llamas, they were not bred to be beasts of burden, but were bred specifically for their fibre.

Alpaca fibre is used for making knitted, felted and woven items, similar to that made of wool. These items include blankets, sweaters, hats, gloves, scarves, ponchos and a wide variety of textiles all created in South America. Here in Canada, the fibre is made into yarns and felt which is then utilized in the making of sweaters, socks, coats and bedding (duvet batting). The fibre comes in more than 52 natural colours as classified in Peru, 12 as classified in Australia and 16 as classified in the United States. Canada recognized 22 natural colours.
